Special Education Needs and Child Classes

Children and SEN in the studio

At Clayways, pottery is wonderfully calming and our small-group SEN pottery classes near Nantwich are built around that. With no more than four makers in the studio at a time, no strict schedule to keep and a patient, friendly teacher on hand throughout, every session moves at the pace that suits the person holding the clay.

We welcome children and adults with special educational needs, including autistic children, those with ADHD, anxiety or sensory processing differences, and anyone who simply finds big, busy groups too much.

Some of our SEN makers come for a one-off calming session; others come every week and have built real skill and confidence at the wheel. Both are equally welcome.

Please get in touch any time and we can build the sessions around your child and their needs. We also support home education and childrens' small parties but we do ask that an adult stays with all children 13 and under.

Pottery is a hands-on, screen-free activity with a natural rhythm. Kneading clay is grounding; the wheel gives immediate, honest feedback; and there's no "right answer" to get wrong. For many of our SEN visitors, the studio is one of the few places where they can fully relax while still learning something real.

  • Tiny groups;  a maximum of 4 people per session, including 1:1 tuition if preferred

  • Flexible pace; your session is shaped around you, not a timetable

  • A quiet, homely studio; no music blasting, no crowds, no pressure

  • Real results; every maker keeps what they create

  • The same friendly face; you'll know who's teaching you before you arrive

What a session looks like

We'll greet you at the blue-grey gate at the end of our garden drive, show you around so nothing is a surprise, and start with whatever feels comfortable. Many makers like to begin by simply squishing and rolling the clay before trying the wheel. There's no rush to "produce" anything. Drinks are available throughout, aprons are provided, and you can stop, move around or take a break at any point.

A note for sensory-sensitive visitors: the studio is a converted garden building with a n oil heater for warmth, running water for washing, and the hum of the wheel when it's spinning. We do have a friendly dog and two cats, who can stay well out of the way (or in another room) if you'd prefer — just let us know when you book.

SEN pottery — questions we're often asked

Can a parent or carer stay in the session? Yes, absolutely. Parents and carers are always welcome to stay, join in, or simply sit with a cuppa nearby ; whatever helps the maker feel settled.

Do you need any experience at all? None. Most of our SEN makers have never touched clay before, and that's genuinely the best starting point.

Can we visit the studio before booking? Yes please just ask. A short, no-pressure look around before a first session works really well for many families.
