Beginners Pottery Classes with Tuition

Nobody is good at pottery as soon as they sit down, and that's the entire point. There are numerous skills to learn and our beginners sessions are built for people who have never touched clay - or who can't remember what they learned at school many years ago.

Our beginners sessions are always small groups of no more than four people and we love showing people how to play with clay. Our sessions are built around you and your abilities and ambitions and are perfect for children, parents, grandparents, friends, family members...or like many before you, just come on your own and you will quickly make new friends.

What happens in your first session?

In one 3-hour session you could wedge your first clay, learn the three basics (pinching, coiling and slab work) and, if you fancy it, have a first go on the wheel.

You'll take home two or three pieces after they've been glazed and fired, usually ready within three weeks.

What happens after that?

Most beginners move on to open studio membership or a block booking where skills compound fast: centering, pulling walls, trimming, glazing.

Others just come back for studio sessions whenever they fancy a making day — the Flexi-Pass (5 sessions, £195) is built for exactly that.

What's included?

Clay, tools, aprons, glazes and firings. Tea, coffee, soft drinks are always available.

There are no additional charges for any clay or glazes that we have in stock (note, we have over 100! Other people buy handbags or shoes, Tracy buys glaze!)

We don't make any firing charges either for as many pieces as you make (fair useage does apply) but for nearly all hobby potters there are no additional charges.

We help our students sell their work professionally so we help them from right at the beginning to making money from their pots. When you move into this category we will charge a reasonable commission for selling the pots and if you are a large production potter we could charge for additional clay but only by discussion and agreement :)
