From Scribbles to Something Special: How to Preserve Handwriting and Children's Drawings Forever
By Tracy Cross, Clayways Pottery
You know that little note your child wrote when they were five? The one that says "I luv U Mummy" with a backwards letter, three questionable spellings and a drawing of you looking suspiciously like a potato?
Don't throw it away. It could be priceless.
Or perhaps you've got an old birthday card with your dad's handwriting, a shopping list from your mum, or a recipe written by your grandmother in that wonderful, slightly wobbly handwriting that you would recognise anywhere.
Funny, isn't it? We spend years collecting photographs, but sometimes it's the smallest scribble that brings back the biggest memories.
Here at Clayways, in our little pottery studio in Cheshire, we've found a rather lovely way to make those memories last.
We turn real handwriting, children's drawings and treasured messages into beautiful personalised ceramic keepsakes.
And no, we don't mean typing the words into a fancy font and pretending it's the same thing.
We mean the actual handwriting. The wonky letters. The loops. The little hearts instead of dots over the i's. All those tiny details that make someone's writing unmistakably theirs.
We call them Forever Notes.
And I have to say, they're rather special.
Why is someone's handwriting so precious?
Think about it.
You can photograph someone's face. You can record their voice. But handwriting is something wonderfully personal.
Your mum's familiar signature. Your grandfather's beautifully neat writing. Your child's first attempt at spelling their own name.
It's almost like having a little piece of that person with you.
And sometimes the words themselves aren't even particularly profound.
"Don't forget the milk."
"Love you, Mum."
"Back in ten minutes."
Not exactly Shakespeare, are they?
But written by someone you love, suddenly they're worth more than anything you could buy in a shop.
That's why personalised handwriting keepsakes are such meaningful gifts. They preserve something completely unique that simply cannot be replaced.
Can you really turn handwriting into pottery?
Yes! And this is where the magic happens.
Well, I say magic. There's actually quite a lot of clay, specialist ceramic processes, careful preparation and some very hot kilns involved.
But magic sounds considerably more glamorous.
At Clayways, we can take a photograph or image of your treasured handwriting and reproduce it onto a handmade ceramic piece.
That could be:
A little ring dish with a handwritten "Love you".
A beautiful ceramic coaster with a treasured signature.
A personalised plate featuring a special message.
A keepsake tile displaying a child's first drawing.
A vase or decorative piece carrying words that mean the world to you.
A ceramic gift featuring a family recipe written in someone's original handwriting.
The aim is to preserve the character of the original writing, not replace it with something tidier.
Because, frankly, perfection is overrated.
Especially when it comes to memories.
Children's drawings: from fridge masterpieces to forever keepsakes
If you've ever had children, you'll know that your fridge can quickly resemble a rather chaotic art gallery.
There are stick people with enormous heads, dogs that look like horses and pictures of the family where Dad appears to have seventeen fingers.
And every single one is apparently a masterpiece.
The trouble is, paper doesn't always survive the years.
It gets folded, crumpled, faded, accidentally recycled or covered in something sticky that nobody wants to identify.
So why not turn your child's drawing into a ceramic keepsake?
Imagine taking that first drawing of Grandma and turning it into a little dish she can treasure.
Or preserving the very first time your child wrote their name on a handmade ceramic tile.
These make wonderful personalised gifts for grandparents, parents and godparents.
And when that child grows up into a teenager who communicates largely through grunts and the occasional request for money, you'll still have that lovely little drawing from when they thought you were the most wonderful person in the world.
Priceless.
Can you preserve handwriting from someone who has passed away?
Absolutely. And these are some of the most meaningful pieces we can make.
Sometimes, after losing someone we love, the smallest things become the most important.
A birthday card. A handwritten letter. A note tucked inside an old book.
Even a shopping list can suddenly become something you wouldn't part with for anything.
A memorial handwriting keepsake allows you to preserve those familiar words on something beautiful and lasting.
It might be a simple "Love, Dad" on a ceramic dish, a line from a letter on a keepsake tile, or a signature reproduced exactly as it was written.
There's no need for grand speeches or elaborate messages.
Sometimes just two words are enough.
We understand how precious these pieces can be, and we treat them with the care they deserve.
And if you're not quite sure what you'd like, please ask. We're very happy to help you work out what would look beautiful.
Grandma's handwritten recipe deserves better than a kitchen drawer
Now here's an idea I particularly love.
Those old handwritten family recipes.
You know the ones.
A slightly stained piece of paper with instructions like:
"Add a bit of milk."
"Cook until done."
"Use enough flour."
Helpful, Grandma. Very helpful.
But those recipes are often part of our family history.
Imagine preserving your grandmother's handwriting on a ceramic plate or decorative kitchen keepsake.
Not just the recipe itself, but the way she wrote it.
The floury fingerprints may have to remain on the original paper, but the handwriting can become something beautiful to display.
A personalised handwritten recipe keepsake makes a thoughtful present for someone who loves cooking, family traditions or simply remembering the people who taught them.
And unlike the original scrap of paper, you won't accidentally throw it out with the takeaway menus.
What makes a personalised ceramic gift different?
There are lots of personalised gifts available these days.
You can put someone's name on almost anything.
Mugs. Cushions. Socks. Even underpants, should the mood take you.
But there's something different about preserving someone's actual handwriting.
It isn't just a name added to a product.
It's a memory.
And when that memory is placed onto a handmade ceramic piece, you have something that combines personal meaning with craftsmanship.
Each Clayways piece is created in our Cheshire studio, rather than being an anonymous mass-produced item. We work with clay, glazes and specialist ceramic techniques to create something individual.
And because we're working with real handwriting or drawings, no two Forever Notes are quite the same.
Which is rather the point.
How do you turn handwriting or a drawing into a ceramic keepsake?
It's much easier than you might imagine.
Step 1: Find your special handwriting or drawing.
It could be from a birthday card, letter, recipe book, school drawing, handwritten note or even a little signature.
Step 2: Take a clear photograph.
Good lighting helps enormously. Try to keep the paper flat and avoid shadows across the writing.
Step 3: Choose your ceramic piece.
Perhaps a ring dish, coaster, plate, tile or something else entirely. If you're unsure, we can help you decide.
Step 4: Send us your image.
We'll look at your handwriting or artwork and help work out how best to reproduce it.
Step 5: We create your Forever Note.
We prepare your design, make and decorate your ceramic piece, then carefully fire and finish it.
Step 6: The happy bit.
Your finished keepsake is carefully packaged and sent to you, ready to give as a gift or keep for yourself.
Warning: tissues may be required when opening.
Frequently asked questions about personalised handwriting gifts
Does the handwriting have to be neat?
Good heavens, no.
If it did, half the population would be disqualified immediately.
We actually love handwriting with character. The little imperfections are what make it personal.
We do need an image clear enough to work from, but don't worry if the writing itself is slightly wobbly.
Can you use handwriting from an old birthday card?
Yes. Old birthday cards, letters and notes can be wonderful sources for a handwriting keepsake.
Just send us a clear photograph and we'll check whether the writing is suitable.
Can you turn my child's drawing into a ceramic gift?
Yes! Children's drawings are perfect for Forever Notes.
From first attempts at writing to elaborate family portraits featuring inexplicably enormous ears, we love them all.
Can you combine handwriting from different people?
Potentially, yes. If you have several messages or signatures you'd like to bring together, talk to us about your idea and we'll see what works best.
Will the handwriting fade?
Our Forever Notes use specialist ceramic processes and kiln firing to create a durable finish designed to preserve the artwork for years to come.
As with all ceramics, they still need sensible care. They aren't indestructible, particularly if introduced to a tiled kitchen floor at speed.
How long does a personalised ceramic keepsake take to make?
Handmade pottery takes time because clay must be prepared, dried, fired and finished.
We recommend allowing approximately three to six weeks, depending on the piece and our studio workload.
If you have a particular date in mind, please contact us before ordering.
Can I order a personalised handwriting gift if I don't live in Cheshire?
Of course!
Although our studio is based near Nantwich in Cheshire, we can create keepsakes for customers elsewhere in the UK and arrange delivery.
You don't need to visit us in person to turn a treasured note into something special.
W
hat occasions are Forever Notes perfect for?
The lovely thing about these personalised ceramic gifts is that they aren't limited to one occasion.
They make thoughtful presents for Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries and weddings. They're also beautiful gifts for grandparents, new parents and families celebrating a baby's first milestones.
And sometimes, you don't need an occasion at all.
Sometimes you simply find a little note in a drawer and think:
"I really don't want to lose this."
That's reason enough.
Some things are simply too precious to leave in a drawer
I love making pottery. I love the feel of clay, the creativity and even the occasional moment when something comes out of the kiln looking exactly as I'd hoped. Which, as any potter will tell you, deserves a small celebration.
But what I particularly love about Forever Notes is the story behind each piece.
It's not really about the dish, the coaster or the tile.
It's about the person who wrote those words.
The child who drew that picture.
The grandmother who scribbled down her famous cake recipe without mentioning how much butter to use.
The dad who always signed his cards in exactly the same way.
Those are the little things that make a life.
And I think they deserve to be kept.
So before you throw away that old birthday card, child's drawing or scruffy handwritten note, have another look.
You might just be holding the beginnings of something rather beautiful.
With love, clay and the occasional kiln-related drama,
